Herbal and Dietary Therapies for Nutritional Anemia

When hemoglobin is 12 or less before 20wks, you can begin to build up your iron stores with the following suggestions.

  • Floradix (sold at the local health food store), a liquid whole-foods blend of carrot root, stinging nettle herb, spinach leaves, fennel seed, couch grass root, kelp whole, hibiscus flowers, yeast extract, rose hip fruit extract, wheat germ extract.

  • Floravital (the vegan form of floradix)

  • Blood builder MegaFoods

  • Vitamin C with bioflavinoids supplement, helps

  • Kelp powder on food, spirulina, chlorella, kelp tablets or dulse (high in iron)

  • Spirulina and chlorella

  • Nutritional yeast

  • Folic acid tablets 1-5mg daily

  • Yellow dock tincture

  • 400-800IU of vitamin E daily (taken first, iron 8 hours after)

  • 1-2 tablets of non-sulfate iron

  • Ferrofood supplement

  • Grapes, plums, dark greens, organ meats, black cherries, sea vegetables, miso, molasses, beets.

  • Nettle infusion tea 1 cup several times daily or tinctures

  • Cook with cast iron

  • Cook leafy greens or other iron rich foods with vitamin c rich foods like lemon juice

  • Exercise also stimulates the body’s use of nutritive elements that raise the hemoglobin (try walking or swimming)

Avoid

  • Taking iron supplements with meals (try first thing in the morning before eating)

  • Coffee or tea when taking your iron supplement
